Its been a busy month over at the Letters studio. We just wrapped up our third project in about as many weeks. This last project was a limited cover design for GATES newest 12″ e.p. The band handled most of the actual design work and we worked out the cover mechanics. We were shooting for a real touch and feel experience so we decided on 110 Lettra for the paper. This also helped us achieve the look we wanted for the blind impression on the cover, which I think was executed nicely… you can click the photos to expand them.

Since we were working with size limitations that are not conducive to printing full LP sized sleeves, we needed a clever way to make the back flap work that was a little more interesting than just having it arbitrarily wrap around the bottom. By putting it sideways we were able to accentuate the back type. It really pops…

 The back flap was the only area that got inked on the actual cover. We used a AB Dick Pro-Gloss Black and everyone knew it was right on the first print. It was jumping off the page. In the end I’m not sure how we could’ve made the back design any nicer. The mechanics included we were just really proud of how it came off…

We also letterpressed the inserts using the same ink on an 80# Finch uncoated cover stock. Again the ink popped perfectly off the page. Combining the bands great insert design with letterpress was such a good idea.

After a couple days of printing, numbering & scoring the records are finally ready to go. The public response has been overwhelming, being huge music fans and record collectors it is always really rewarding for us. Here are a few final detailed shots. And a free full stream of the record!
